ADA Compliance FAQs

    1. COLOR CONTRAST: If you are unsure whether a color combination is ADA compliant, you can check here: Contrast Checker.
    2. STANDARD RED is not an ADA compliant color. Please use #B00000 or darker when you want to have something emphasized by red text.
    1. LINKING: You are okay to link to documents in the Google Suite, but all images in the document must have alt text. Please see the Images section for additional information on alt text.
    1. ALT TEXT: Descriptive alt text must be entered for all images.  If an image is decorative only, use “” for the alt text.
    2. IMAGES WITH TEXT: For images containing text, ALL TEXT must be included in the alt text. If it is more than a few words, you will need to post the information in a different format (e.g., ADA compliant pdf) or create a page on your website with all of the text from the image in the text of the page and link to that page directly from the image.
    1. LINK TEXT: Links need to contain text that describes the link. For example, if you want to direct visitors to the District policy page, do not use “Click here” for the link text. You will need to use something like “Click here for District Policy” or just “District Policy”. This way a visitor using a screen reader immediately knows what the link is for without reading the surrounding text. Screen readers are set up so a user can jump from one link to the next without reading through the whole page, so if the text is not descriptive, they will not know where the link goes.
    1. UPLOADING: ALL pdfs must be sent to Abby Annis to be made ADA compliant before uploading to your website. No exceptions. Please email the document in its original format (e.g., Word, Excel, etc.) whenever possible. Unless it is a particularly long document, compliant documents should be returned to you on the same day.
    1. POSTING: All videos posted on the website must have captions or a transcript of the video must be included on the same page or linked directly below the video. The best option for this is to upload the video to YouTube, ensure the captions are turned on, and embed the video on your website.
