Academic Honors Credit Exemption Request Form

  • Grade Point Average (GPA) is calculated to determine students’ class ranking and status for Academic Honors. To recognize the extra rigor involved in pre-Advanced Placement, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment, these classes are given a weighted 5.0 scale GPA calculation scale instead of the regular 4.0 scale. Students who earn As in these classes can earn a GPA that is higher than a 4.0. When students take more classes than the minimum required for graduation, their cumulative GPA will be inadvertently reduced when these classes have a maximum GPA weight of 4.0 points. It is the district’s desire to encourage students to take as many academic classes as possible without negatively impacting their earned GPA or class rank.

To exempt extra classes from the GPA calculation*, students will review their Graduation Progress Report with their school counselor. Only classes taken as electives in excess of the minimum number of credits required for graduation may be exempted. On the Historical Grade Report, these classes should be struck out in red ink and annotated as “Exempt.” The annotated Historical Grade Report should be  turned into the school records secretary. After the requested change has been approved by a school administrator, the records secretary will make the change in the student information system.

    * Colleges may include all grades, as well as exempted grades, in their GPA calculations.

Please exempt the grades from the classes marked out in red on my Historical Grade Report from my weighted GPA calculation.
