D93 News - September 22, 2021

Posted Date: 10/14/2021

It’s with heavy hearts that we share the news that yesterday one of our Tiebreaker teachers, Karen Willert, passed away unexpectedly at home. At this time, we do not know the cause of her death, but she had been out on sick leave for several days prior to her passing. A family member reported that Karen was exhibiting symptoms that are consistent with the symptoms most commonly associated with COVID. While there will likely be speculation about the cause of her death, these are the only facts that we know at this time.

Karen first joined Bonneville School District as a teacher in 2005 as a teacher at Ucon Elementary, where she taught for two years. After a few years away, Karen returned to Bonneville School District in 2013 as a teacher at Tiebreaker, where she has taught since. She was a beloved member of the Tiebreaker faculty, and her presence will be missed by staff and students.

Bonneville School District mandated universal face coverings for staff and students from August 31st, 2020 through March 5th, 2021. On March 5th, following East Idaho Public Health lifting a face covering mandate for Bonneville County, D93 suspended its face covering requirement.
At the time, the active cases in the school district continued to consistently decline even after the face covering requirement was suspended in both the county and the school district. At the same time, we recognize that new variants of the COVID-19 virus may be more likely to spread among school-aged children. Today in a Special Meeting of the Board of Trustees, the Board approved changes to the District’s COVID response plan.

It may sound like a broken record but there’s a reason why we keep posting about the District’s urgent need for subs.
Things are bad right now and we found out the sub shortage extends to our Paras too. Please contact Nancy at (208) 557-6821 for more information about the D93 substitute teaching program.
